Cynthia “Cindy” Lewin, a seasoned lawyer with experience in the nonprofit sector and with large and diverse affiliate organizations, served as general counsel for AARP from June 2010 to November 2017.
In November 2017, Cindy joined the Nonprofit Organizations Practice at Venable LLP as a partner.
Cindy spent nearly 20 years in-house at major nonprofits. She joined AARP from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), one of the nation’s largest conservation and education organizations, where she served as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary. During her tenure, she was named to the federation’s “Innovation Dream Team” to create new entrepreneurial ideas for the organization. She also managed the information technology, human resources and office services teams. Previously, she served as executive vice president and general counsel at Volunteers of America, where she built the organization’s legal department to serve 250 subsidiary corporations.
Cindy also was a partner at Lichtman, Trister, Singer and Ross, where she focused on tax-exempt organizations; prior to that she was an associate at Arnold & Porter. She also worked as an economist at the Bureau of Economic Analysis, as chief legislative assistant to Rep. Tom Loeffler from Texas, and as a law clerk to a federal district court judge in Los Angeles.
She is past chair of the Nonprofit Organizations Committee of the Association of Corporate Counsel and of the Exempt Organizations Committee of the D.C. Bar Taxation Section, and serves on Independent Sector’s 2014 Ethics and Accountability Advisory Group and the board of directors and executive committee of the National Human Services Assembly.
In 2011, the inaugural year of the award, she was named one of “Washington’s Most Influential In-House Counsels” by Legal Times. Under her leadership, in 2013 the AARP office of General Counsel was recognized for “Best Outside Counsel Management” by the National Law Journal.
She earned her B.A. degree in English and economics from Wellesley College and her J.D. from Yale Law School.
